Pontos - Hungarian Mudi
(Born June 22, 2002)
On September 13, 2002 Pontos began his long journey at 12 weeks of age when he flew from Copenhagen to Frankfurt where he stayed overnite at the airport doggy hotel. The following day he continued on with his 9-hour adventure to Calgary. We were both overjoyed to see that he was safe and sound and in our arms. Within one hour of his arrival he was and running in the grass at the park chasing butterflies. He certainly lives up to his name, which in Hungarian means "correct and precise".
Origin - Hungary
Of the Five Hungarian herding dog breeds (Komondor, Kuvasz, Puli, Pumi, Mudi) the Mudi is the least well known. The breed came into existence in the late 18th to 19th century from the cross breeding between small Hungarian herding dogs and pricked eared German Shepherd type of dogs. The Mudi has some features in common with Kuvasz, especially hair type, but his closest relative is the Croatian Sheepdog.
Use The Mudi is used as a Herding dog and because of his courageous disposition, he is very popular with the shepherds for the use of herding large and difficult livestock. In addition to herding, the Mudi is also used for guarding, killing pests such as rats, hunting wild boar, and searching out drugs. Excellent breed for dog sports such as agility, frisbee, obedience, working trials and search and rescue. After the Mudi is done his job he again turns into an easy-going loveable companion.
Behavior
The Mudi is extremely able to learn, of lively temperament, courageous, watchful, keen to work, alert and adaptable.
Rare Breed
The Mudi is a rare breed and it has been estimated that there are around 1000 - 1200 Mudi's worldwide. There are presently three owners in Canada including us that now own Mudi's making Pontos the sixth Canadian Import. The breed is in the process of being recognized by CKC and once that happens, we are very proud that Pontos will make history, as he will be the first Male Mudi to be recognized by CKC.
We look forward to and are excited about training and competing with Pontos and for the continuation and devotion of such a rare breed.
